"Staccato" represents some of the first tentative steps in expanding my scope of subject matter beyond what has been an intense seven years of exploring portraiture. Initially this move was more out of necessity as having sitters visit the studio or actively being out and about looking for interesting faces became impossible during the COVID-19 lockdown and subsequent restrictions.

As for many artists, the lockdown forced me to not only evaluate my work and techniques, but also question the validity and value of painting itself in the wake of what would be a completely altered society. This overwhelming sense that the world had changed completely, gave licence to explore new ideas and approaches to painting freely.

The resulting work from this long period of experimentation and critical analysis has given birth to a new body of work where the conceptual focus is on the interplay between the appearance of our physical world and the "unseen" energy that its built from. The works represent the interplay between physical forms and the flow of energy (often visually represented as waveforms in Science) like light, colour and sound.
